White chocolate cherry cookies and white chocolate peppermint fudge
25 Photos of December: Oh, Fudge
Today began the season of holiday baking for me – the day when I officially start making all the goods to go in the holiday boxes for family and friends. I’m making/baking and freezing a lot of it until a day or so before I have to gift it to keep things fresh and save some sanity so I’m not doing everything all in one weekend. Great grandma’s fudge was made today (well, or close enough. I really don’t have her recipe but the recipe on the back of the marshmallow fluff jar? Totally close to how hers tasted), and there’s a batch of sugar cookie dough in the fridge for cut-outs tomorrow. And white chocolate cherry cookies, which I’m only making for the cherries because I’m totally of the opinion that white chocolate is an abomination.
(I’m participating in Treadway’s December Photo Project these next 25 days. I never feel like I take enough pictures, and since there’s so much going on this time of year I thought it might be fun to capture something each day, even if it’s not all festive and fun! Check out the linked image below and go find some other awesome bloggers participating this year, too)
Holy Holiday Cheer, Batman!
Hi everyone! I’m in some serious holiday cheer this year! Totally unusual for me, as I’m normally grinch-like. I’m actively trying to avoid that this year, by attempting to find things to make the holiday season happier, and I think it’s working.
Today I received a few holiday baking items I ordered from King Arthur Flour, and I’m in love with my new polar bear cookie cutter. I’m not great at decorating cookies, but I’m learning and practicing (which, I’m told, makes perfect). I can’t wait to bake a few and try to decorate them and see how they turn out. I think an epic baking day/weekend is in order next weekend!
Hats, Thanksgiving, and other Monday ramblings
Charity hats #1 and 2. White one is Twistygoo, black and white one is Hadley. That’s 2 down, 8 more to go (with one kid-sized one on the needles currently).
It’s hard to believe that we’re in the final days before Thanksgiving. We’re hosting again this year, which means a lot of cleaning going on as well as a lot of stress. I’m sure the family doesn’t care if the house isn’t spotless, but I clean like they do regardless. I’ve decided this year to make my life a tad easier, so I’m just doing the turkey and stuffing (oh, and homemade cranberry sauce) and requested everyone else bring a dish or two. Last year I made sides and by the time everyone brought their own dishes we had too much food and not enough counter space!
Other things/ramblings:
- Finally getting back into running after taking 6 months off after my 5k in May. Might even be getting the Mr to join me this time around! It’s probably too much to hope that we’ll be running 5k’s together come Spring.
- Ran across The Life Less Bullshit Manifesto today and I’m in love. Both with the manifesto and the author.
- In line with the manifesto’s “spend less time obsessing and more time actually doing” idea, I decided to dump a chore I absolutely hate: planning dinners/grocery lists for the week. So I signed up with eMeals. Every week I’m now getting my grocery list emailed straight to me so I don’t have to think of it. No more trolling the internet looking for food inspiration when I really just don’t care so long as its healthy/not full of processed crap.
- Ikea! Oh, Ikea! Took a trip Saturday to visit and came home with a new shower curtain, some new towels, a new memory-foam pillow (which was annoying the first night, but I’m adjusting and my neck is thanking me). I did not come home with the Strandmon chair I saw and immediately wanted. I was incredibly tempted, however.
- Racking off my 2nd batch of hard cider today! Or maybe bottling. I need to taste it and see. Trying to decide what next to brew. Mead, maybe?
A New Year’s Toast
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring happy bells across the snow;
The year is going, let him go.

Fresh, new year – fresh, new blog!
I’m not one for New Years Resolutions. But, on pondering 2011 and many of the things I’ve felt over the last year, I came to a lot of conclusions and decided to make this year different. I spent a lot of 2011 feeling agitated, annoyed, down on myself and my life, and letting outside influences drag me down on top of it all. And you know what? I’m done with that.
So here’s a toast. To fresh starts and happiness. To leaving the bitter old past behind and welcoming the new one with open arms. To being content with what I have, and making do until I can attain that which I do not. May the new year find me spending more time doing the things I truly enjoy, and less time feeling glued behind a computer screen.
And may the new year find you exactly where you need to be.
