Restless Sunday

August 5, 2012 Marie Leave a Comment

When I awoke this morning I knew exactly what kind of day it would be. Overnight storms carried throughout the night, and the constant drizzle of rain pelting the windows made it all too easy to burrow under the blankets and sleep in (a rare occurrence for us). I’ve heard we received almost 3″ of rain, and by the water I found in the basement (another rare occurrence) I believe it.

I brewed a pot of extra strong coffee, and made pancakes and sausage for breakfast, but the semblance of normalcy ended there. I’ve spent the rest of my day bouncing from one thing to the next – knitting, reading, laundry, catching up on my Google reader, more knitting, more reading. At one point I was just wandering the house pretty aimlessly, hoping something to do would jump out at me. Then I debated on baking some bread or cookies, but the idea of heating the kitchen up wasn’t too appealing. So it was back to knitting and reading.

It’s just been that kind of lazy, restless day.

A cozy for this non-cozy girl

July 19, 2012 Marie Leave a Comment

I’ve tried writing a nice, thoughful, eloquent post 5 times now. I give up. My brain just doesn’t seem to want to work out the varied thoughts that I keep trying to get out.

So here’s my latest quick-knit project: a french press cozy in some leftover handspun yarn. I’m not normally a ‘cozy’ kind of person. But I’m making an exception for my french press, which was my ‘splurge’ purchase for our upcoming camping trip. Obviously making sure I keep that brewing coffee nice and hot is of utmost importance!

Winter knits

Yes, it’s summer. Yes, it’s 90-some degrees. And yes, I’m knitting socks for winter. Trust me, my toes will thank me come January. (Also, forcing myself to stash-bust before I accumulate any more yarn with my birthday money!)

Something new for Sunday

July 1, 2012 Marie Leave a Comment

I’m trying something new today. It started off as a way to entertain the niece. She quickly became bored with it and I took over. I’ve had the knitting board since the holidays but never bothered to get it out until now. It’s different. It’s a bit tedious, moreso than knitting is. But, like anything, I know I’ll get better with practice.

Vernal Equinox

June 1, 2012 Marie Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I sat down to knit on something I wanted to. The baby sweaters I needed to knit are done, and now I feel like I can breathe a little easier knowing I no longer have a deadline. The nice break in weather isn’t half bad on the knitting mojo, either. Knitting in 90 degree weather just isn’t appealing (though spinning isn’t so bad!)

This is my Vernal Equinox shawl. It’s meant to be knit in a light fingering weight yarn, but I decided to use up some stash of worsted wool for it.  I thought it might make a nice, big, squishy piece to wrap myself up in come fall. See, I run into problems with a lot of the knitted shawls I’ve made: they’re too small. I’m a curvy girl so, naturally, there’s more surface area to cover. Almost all of mine end up being more like scarves than shawls – or a shawlette, as I’ve seen it listed on Ravelry as. Clearly not serving its purpose. So here I am, attempting another shawl in hopes that this one might knit up to exactly what I need.

I have a vision in my head of curling up in this and watching the sun set by a big body of water come September (i.e. vacation!), so we’ll see if I can manage to finish it despite the summer heat. This might have to be one of those “cool days” or “it’s so cold in this Starbucks with the A/C on too high” knits.

Welcome

Pardon the garden. A phrase I’m most likely to utter anytime anyone visits the house during the growing seasons of spring through fall. Sure, there are pretty flowers and delicious veggies in there somewhere, but they might be a little hard to find amidst the mess of overgrown grass, dandelions, and weeds that have found their way in there and haven’t been pulled.
