Season changes

Autumn has arrived… kind of. 80 degrees isn’t exactly what I consider fall weather, but it didn’t stop me from wearing my plaid flannel to go pick apples at the annual festival at the local orchard. Normally we wait until after the festival to get the apples at a discounted price, but when you have toddlers you have to compromise – and the idea of a $5/per adult admission for the Little Mr to get to see goats, play in corn mazes, take a trip on the hay ride, etc seemed more worth it than not. We had such a great afternoon that he fell asleep in the less than 10 minute ride home, so we drove around and around looking at houses for nearly 45 minutes just to let him get his nap out. And now I’m left with probably 20-25 pounds of apples that I need to figure out what to do with. Canning probably won’t happen this year, so I’m thinking lots and lots of baked pies and crisps over the next few weeks.

This changing of seasons is marred, however, by the hole in my heart that is my dog, Molly. After months and months of the decision being in the back of my mind, the last month has really taken it from something I needed to consider to something I had to make a final decision on. Her quality of life just wasn’t there anymore, and it killed me to have to make that call, but ultimately she was suffering and it was selfish of me to let her continue as she was. She was 13 years old and a wonderful companion to me for half of that time. My routines are all messed up – there isn’t anyone to let outside in the mornings or before bed, no one cleaning up food behind the toddler, no one following me around from room to room while I try to clean. Coming home from the vet felt… depressingly lonely. She wasn’t there to greet me at the door. Just emptiness. Sigh. I’m going to miss that furry, sweet thing.

Rainy day knitting

The grass needs mowed, the garden weeds tamed, and the porch swept. The house needs cleaned, laundry needs done, the baby room still isn’t finished… but sometimes you just have to take an hour or three to sit on the porch and enjoy the rain. Miss Molly and I hung out enjoying the rain, she guarding her domain and watching as cars drove by, me knitting as fast as I could manage on my Wee Austin Hoodie for this Little Mr. I feel a bit like I’m running out of time to knit for this little one – 10 weeks seems so far away and yet as though it is tomorrow.

I’ll play catch-up on the chores this afternoon, of course. I can’t ignore them forever.

December

Things are looking merry and bright around our house now that Thanksgiving has come and gone. Thanksgiving itself was a stressful ordeal, as it always is when I host, so I’m thankful to have a whole long weekend to recuperate and settle in for the next holiday. For the most part we’ve stayed tucked in our home, knitting and putting together our winter puzzle and watching more TV than I care to admit!

Friday is almost always my “decorating” day – the day I dig out the tree and put everything up. It’s not perfect, and there are things I would like to change about it – mostly, the ornaments. There are a lot of ornaments I purchased 10+ years ago that I don’t love, purchased before I really figured out my tastes in decor and whatnot, but it seems wasteful to buy new when these work just fine and haven’t broken yet. Some years I’ll buy a few new ones to add to the tree, but that felt wasteful this year, too. Make do or do without, you know? Some days that mantra doesn’t work for me, but this weekend it certainly did.

After everything was up I had the Mr help me play with some photos. I wanted to achieve that big blurry circle look with the tree up, so he showed me what to adjust on the DSLR to get it. The snowflake and reindeer are our stocking holders, which we just used as something to photograph since I didn’t have other ideas. Then, of course, I had to play with pictures of the pup. She did not want to sit still for her photo! She, instead, thought that it was play time since I was on the floor on her level. Silly pup. I managed a few good ones, but not a lot!

Darkness, then.

kitchen_lights molly1 molly3Fall is far too quickly disappearing, and the dark of winter looms behind. My beautiful sunlight is going away, there is nothing left to tend in the garden, and the holidays are fast approaching. I leave for the workday in a bit of morning light, and I drive home in the tail end of sunset. Short days and long nights make for what feels like a long winter.

Everything here feels so lethargic. Everything feels like it takes longer – I snuggle up in bed longer because it’s too cold to get up for work, the car takes longer to get warmed up for the drive to work, I move slower and more relaxed around the house with little desire to hurry and get anything done. Even my energy to knit has seemed to slow.

I have little LED stars draped over my kitchen windows, to cope with the seasonal changes, permanently lit to add a bit of glow to the otherwise dark home. The poor pup, normally accustomed to going to bed when it gets dark, crawls onto her bed quite early now and then looks at us as though she’s confused as to why we’re not going to bed as well. So sweet, my little pup, and getting old. She always looks so worried, and she’s never very far from my side. If she’s not on her bed near the couch then she’s on the floor under my feet, or behind my chair in the office, or next to the furnace vent by the sewing machine. The little smarty-pants has even figured out how to bump the door to the second floor so she can follow me upstairs. It’s hard to be mad at such a clever, loving companion. ♥

Welcome

Pardon the garden. A phrase I’m most likely to utter anytime anyone visits the house during the growing seasons of spring through fall. Sure, there are pretty flowers and delicious veggies in there somewhere, but they might be a little hard to find amidst the mess of overgrown grass, dandelions, and weeds that have found their way in there and haven’t been pulled.
