Little cabin in the woods

November 5, 2012 Marie Leave a Comment

2nd annual weekend with my knitting girls. A cute little cabin in the woods with some really amazing people that I’m lucky enough to call my friends. Lots of delicious food, knitting, laughing, movies, and overall just plain relaxing. I even purchased some ruffle yarn at Walmart on a food run and knocked out a scarf Saturday night (and while I’m not a huge fan of novelty yarns I do quite like the look of it, and you can’t beat how fast it knit up).

A previous guest at the cabin had started a treasure hunt, leaving a clue at the end of their guestbook entry and then, subsequently, 2 more clues that leads to the ‘treasure’ (a little bag of found stones from one of the local gem mine touristy place for kids). Each guest has since found and re-hid the treasure, leaving their own clues to its location.  Not ones to break the tradition, we followed along and re-hid the treasure with our own clues and I whipped up a quick little knit sock out of some leftover yarn to contribute our own little treasure.

Home brewing success! That, folks, is my first-ever brew of hard cider. Which tastes more like wine than the Woodchuck I buy.  Still rather than fizzy, with a higher ABV.

I’d like to wax poetic on how amazing it is, but truth be told I’m not sure if it’s very good. Sure, it’s drinkable. I think it passes well by my opinions- not too sweet, not too dry, definitely has that “bite” from the alcohol. It’s probably not a prize-winning brew by any means. But it’s mine, and I made it, and for that alone I’ll probably forgive any negative qualities. (I am very much reluctant to share it with anyone I know, however, out of fear that they’ll say it’s awful!)

A weekend of orange

The trees were in peak color this weekend, and before long the wind will shake the rest of the leaves off the limbs and leave us with the stark, bare branches of winter. I can’t help but want to repeat “Winter is coming” over and over again, to which my husband just gives me a look because he hasn’t read the Game of Thrones series to know where the phrase comes from. These photos were taken at a State Park about a 1/2 hr north of us. We have a habit of always heading south but I really should remember to head north once in a while.

It always amazes me how slowly yet how quickly the trees change. Each fall I study the trees, anticipating their change, anxiously and excitedly finding certain varieties changing earlier than others even if they are only barely changed. For weeks I do this, feeling as though they’ll never shift. And then, like magic, suddenly everything is in full swing. A month of anticipation for gorgeous color that disappears in what feels like a blink of an eye. Fall is never here long enough.

More progress on the little knit from my previous post – another baby sweater for another friend having twins. The pattern is Sweet Cables in Pink from Creative Knitting’s July 2008 issue. I so rarely knit from my pile of knitting magazines, but I was tired of searching through Ravelry’s pattern database and nothing was catching my eye. And what’s the point of buying magazines and books if you’re never going to make anything from them?

On a quiet, gray Monday

October 15, 2012 Marie 2 Comments

Tea and knitting at the dining room table and candles aglow. I’ve tried several times today to watch some TV while I knit, and every time I just felt… uncomfortable. Tired of the background noise, and in need of quiet. It’s strange – I used to be the kind of person who needed noise, now I’m becoming that person who wants the whole house peacefully quiet.

Autumn Hike

There’s a feeling I get when I’m surrounded by nature that I don’t get anywhere else. Sure, there are some pretty awe-inducing man-made things out there, but they can never top a gorgeous view, the scent of the woods, and the shimmer of the wind in the trees. Or a curious deer.

I’ve heard it said that music is food for the soul, but I beg to differ. Nature is, at least for me, food for the soul. I’m not religious, but I believe if I were I’d be a card-carrying member of the one that reveres nature the most.

Welcome

Pardon the garden. A phrase I’m most likely to utter anytime anyone visits the house during the growing seasons of spring through fall. Sure, there are pretty flowers and delicious veggies in there somewhere, but they might be a little hard to find amidst the mess of overgrown grass, dandelions, and weeds that have found their way in there and haven’t been pulled.
