A weekend of orange

October 22, 2012 Marie Leave a Comment

The trees were in peak color this weekend, and before long the wind will shake the rest of the leaves off the limbs and leave us with the stark, bare branches of winter. I can’t help but want to repeat “Winter is coming” over and over again, to which my husband just gives me a look because he hasn’t read the Game of Thrones series to know where the phrase comes from. These photos were taken at a State Park about a 1/2 hr north of us. We have a habit of always heading south but I really should remember to head north once in a while.

It always amazes me how slowly yet how quickly the trees change. Each fall I study the trees, anticipating their change, anxiously and excitedly finding certain varieties changing earlier than others even if they are only barely changed. For weeks I do this, feeling as though they’ll never shift. And then, like magic, suddenly everything is in full swing. A month of anticipation for gorgeous color that disappears in what feels like a blink of an eye. Fall is never here long enough.

More progress on the little knit from my previous post – another baby sweater for another friend having twins. The pattern is Sweet Cables in Pink from Creative Knitting’s July 2008 issue. I so rarely knit from my pile of knitting magazines, but I was tired of searching through Ravelry’s pattern database and nothing was catching my eye. And what’s the point of buying magazines and books if you’re never going to make anything from them?

Autumn Hike

There’s a feeling I get when I’m surrounded by nature that I don’t get anywhere else. Sure, there are some pretty awe-inducing man-made things out there, but they can never top a gorgeous view, the scent of the woods, and the shimmer of the wind in the trees. Or a curious deer.

I’ve heard it said that music is food for the soul, but I beg to differ. Nature is, at least for me, food for the soul. I’m not religious, but I believe if I were I’d be a card-carrying member of the one that reveres nature the most.

Vacation photo dump

Two cameras worth of photos to edit, which is very… boring. All those shots of the lake? They all end up looking the same after a while. I know there was a reason for taking all those photos, but perhaps next time I’ll remember that just a few is perfectly fine.

The weather didn’t want to cooperate, and the perfect sunny weather the previous week had turned to cold and rainy. To make it worse both of us were sick. We made do, though – either sucking it up and going out in the rain or finding shops to duck into to wait the heavier rain out. I spent most of our days feeling high from medicine but trying to power through and make the most of the trip, and then we’d return to the motel where I’d crash hard asleep on the couch while we watched TV. We’re the epitome of exciting, aren’t we?

Despite the weather (and being sick) we managed to see and do quite a bit. Pasties for lunch, hot chocolate at the cafe/book store, beach walks to see the shipwreck remains, lighthouses, waterfalls, Presque Isle with its monster rocks and heavy winds and crashing waves… not a bad itinerary, if I do say so myself.

Homeward bound

We’re on our way home as I write. It’s been a long, kinda chilly weekend but much loved as the Mr and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary. It was a great way to celebrate. Pictures and more to follow as soon as I get a chance to sift through the bazillion photos we took. For now I leave you with a pretty waterfall we visited while in the UP.

LF/MM: camping retreat

July 30, 2012 Marie Leave a Comment

I really do need to plan a week-long camping trip one of these days. It always feels like we set up camp and then, in the blink of an eye, we’re tearing everything back down.

I opted, after much deliberation with myself, to take my phone with me. BUT! I shut it off immediately after I heard that my little furball was safetly at home with my niece and nephew for the weekend and didn’t turn it back on until we came home.

Instead of staring at my phone, checking my social media updates, etc I knit, read, and relaxed. I played card games with the boys and we watched the birds flutter around and we ate ridiculous amounts of delicious camp food. We even watched a movie Saturday night at the campground’s amphitheater (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island – not something I would have picked but hey, it was free and close by!). It was absolute bliss not being connected all the time.

Here’s what highlighted my weekend:

Friday:

A quiet haven in the woods // The teenager practicing his campfire skills // Card games instead of computers and phones // Delicious pizza sandwiches for dinner //  A little bird watching at camp

Saturday:

Waking up to this never gets old // Being that person making bacon and coffee on the campfire for a change // Knitting and reading (why, yes, that is a Star Wars novel) // Taking a stroll through the woods // Foil packs for dinner

Welcome

Pardon the garden. A phrase I’m most likely to utter anytime anyone visits the house during the growing seasons of spring through fall. Sure, there are pretty flowers and delicious veggies in there somewhere, but they might be a little hard to find amidst the mess of overgrown grass, dandelions, and weeds that have found their way in there and haven’t been pulled.
