Spun and knit

handspun-scarf-finished me

The husband’s scarf is done and I really kind of want to steal it. My spinning on the fiber wasn’t the best, and it’s a bit over-spun in places, but the Cascade 220 Sport did a fantastic job of balancing it out. It’s soft and has lovely drape and is just plain lovely. And I won’t steal it because I’m a good wife with a good husband who appreciates that I take time to knit him things.

Mermaids all over

I’m told this arrived to it’s intended recipient, so now I can share this lovely thing. My skills aren’t perfect, but I think it turned out quite adorable.

A little peek

While I really love knitting, there’s something more… instant gratification about sewing. It’s some work to cut the fabric and seam it all together, but overall it goes much faster than trying to stitch up a blanket or a sweater. I can’t show you the full finished product, yet, as I don’t want to spoil the surprise for my friend, so for now you just get this little sneak peek.

Forgotten projects, round 2

Tucked away in a little fabric storage box in the used-to-be-craft-room-now-becoming-baby-room I found this in-progress blanket project. I think it’s the Moderne Baby Blanket? I started it forever ago when I thought we would try the foster-to-adoption route, before those plans changed.

I have a handspun shawl in progress at the moment, but I think I’ll tuck it aside to work on finishing the blue portion and weave in the ends. I won’t be keeping this blanket -I’m very selfish with a lot of my hand knits, but this one, I think, deserves to be passed on to someone I know who will cherish it for their little one. It feels like a project that deserves to move on from this house to another, anyway. So when it’s done I think I’ll tuck it into the mail and surprise a friend with it in hopes that it’s loved and snuggled with on her end.

Vivid

square blanket2 blanket blanket1January. Bitter cold, and we’re stuck indoors more than I’d like. A few weeks ago we had ridiculously cold temperatures that even my fancy snow boots weren’t warm enough for. The poor pup danced around from paw to paw trying to keep them off the ground, it was so cold. The seasonal mood swings are in full force, and I haven’t felt up for blogging or playing with photos much at all this last month. I have hope, though, that all will subside soon. The sun is coming back around and days are getting a bit longer, and by the end of the month I’ll be gearing up for the spring garden and starting pepper and eggplant seedlings in the basement under the grow light so they have plenty of time to grow before they transplant to the outside beds. I’m not entirely sure how successful our growing season this year will be, as things in my life are on the shift, but I’d rather grow a little than nothing at all.

On the above knit… A few friends and I got together and knit this Vivid blanket for our fellow knit-group friend. She’s due with a baby next month, and of course that baby needs to be wrapped up in some handmade warmth.  I ordered 6 colors of yarn, two balls of each, and we divided the yarn up between each of us and knit 2 squares from each ball (so 24 squares in all). Seaming the whole thing together was the biggest pain, and it’s far from perfect, but it’s still quite a lovely little blanket. And I’m tempted to order more yarn to make one for myself, though I have far too many projects on the “to do” list, and more being added weekly, that I really don’t need to be adding anything more.

And since I completely missed the new year, I hope all of you dear readers have had a lovely start to your new year, and that 2014 turns out to be a fantastic year for us all!

Welcome

Pardon the garden. A phrase I’m most likely to utter anytime anyone visits the house during the growing seasons of spring through fall. Sure, there are pretty flowers and delicious veggies in there somewhere, but they might be a little hard to find amidst the mess of overgrown grass, dandelions, and weeds that have found their way in there and haven’t been pulled.
